Save Money Selling Your Car Part 2
17th Sep 2025
The Martin Lewis Bit.
So, the time is coming to sell your car. Either you have discovered a little noise or you are just ready for a change.
Firstly, don’t ignore that rattle it might be just a loose clip or it might be something serious. If you don’t deal with it, the dealer is going treat it as a serious issue.
And even if the car appears perfect, wash it and look again.
That tiny mark that you just saw and would never dream of paying for a £200.00 repair! If you don’t declare it, its £200.00 off the purchase price. A noise, well hey the belts will need replacing, and you only have one key. Keys can cost up to £700.00, that is for an Audi by the way and not a particularly high spec one.
Of course, the dealer knows they can do it cheaper, but your settlement is due and you have arranged to pick your new car up tomorrow! You didn’t even see that mark and suddenly you can hear that tiny noise as well. This dealer is claiming you misdescribed the car and wasted his time.
Now you’re wondering, are you going to get any money in time?
To avoid this. Let us do a professional valuation. We will show you everything that you have to declare, re-assure you that that noise is perfectly normal and make sure you get what you expect. It won't cost a penny.
If the car isn’t right for us, maybe it has no service history or has over 80,000 miles. That doesn’t matter we are still here to help because maybe you’ll remember that next time but if the car is right for us, you will save a lot of time and money!
If you do choose one of the new websites to sell your car that is fine.
This is what you need to do.
- Get the car properly cleaned.
- You need to photograph carefully every mark. Get good photo’s, please do not take those awful ones that show your reflection, or picture baby seats in the back seat and two tonnes of junk in the boot. Make the car look like you loved it.
- Track as much service history as you can. These records are vital. Be careful that you know the service intervals too. Motorway does not! Some cars have two-year intervals and this means that a car with a full history is often reported as only having a partial one. I’ll be honest, I look for those! They are cheaper and only because the owner misadvised by others.
- Check those alloys carefully. Almost all are marked somewhere, oh and don’t forget the glass, a windscreen for a Ranger is £1200.00, alloys can cost over £100.00 to repair. You won’t get discounted repairs on the day of sale.
- Do not think you have sold the car on the night you receive an offer. There is still a long way to go. The day you get the money is the day the car is sold.
- Do not pay fees or agree to wait for your money, and if there is a settlement figure to be paid, make sure you see proof of payment and make sure it clears before the car is driven away.
- Check the dealer that is buying your car. If your finance is not settled on time it will delay new finance, if the dealer goes bust, the debt is still in your name.
- Finally, be honest about the car. If damage is declared it will be estimated at cost prior to the bid, if you miss it, well frankly you are going to have a problem on the day of sale.
You could avoid a lot of hassle with a quick visit, we are always happy to see you
